HIlton's Anca cycles the country for love

Event professionals never do anything by halves – and that includes planning and taking part in their own leisure activities and holidays.

Take Anca Dimitrov-Sîrbu, for instance, the National Sales Manager at Hilton UK&I.

For her first anniversary she and her husband, Martin, decided to celebrate their first wedding anniversary – not with a romantic trip for two somewhere warm but with a rainy endurance cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The keen cycling couple eschewed a beach getaway or hot tub holiday and instead pedalled it the length of the country in a 1944.1km journey to remember.

It took the loved-up pair over seventeen days and they had no support driver and several punctures along the way but they did it and they are elated.

Anca said that there were many ‘lessons learned’– such as overpacking (she actually sent back luggage they didn’t need); there’s no time for social media; bicycle brake pads need to be changed more frequently and ‘always wear waterproofs.’

Being in events, however, made Anca a resourceful person to have out on a mammoth challenge. She and hubby Martin were able to quickly change tyres, make porridge ‘from a flask’ and deep-clean bicycle chains.

Major highlights were seeing stags roaming freely, staying in a castle, cuddles with dogs and hotels with heaters to dry wet socks and t-shirts!

They’re getting ready to do it all again, and maybe make it an annual event, changing the location each year and taking a holiday all the while keeping the carbon footprint in check.

“My husband and I wanted to celebrate our one-year anniversary in a way we would remember it,” she wrote.

“The downside is we like it a lot so it just might become a yearly tradition now.

“When we got to our finish point, we had such a sense of achievement, of pedalling across the UK (the long way round) by our own strength and endurance, and also still liking each other.”
